Does the iPhone change your company Telecom Policy ?


70% of Fortune 100 companies are trying the iPhone, according to Tim Cook, Apple’s COO.  IPhone adoption comes from employees themselves. They are purchasing their own smartphones and using them at work to access data or networks. In 2008, 40% of smartphones were bought by individuals rather than corporations. In 2008, about 7,3 million smartphones in the US were brought into workplace. This figure  will exceed 21 million in 2012.
Many corporations are now embracing the iPhone following a period of initial resistance. All the more since the CEO carries one!
But this has not been without problems, and has required a review of the telecoms policy.
First, it requires technical adaptation from IT staff. Security and data management are the key issues. To address these problems , Apple have developed security and management applications.
Moreover, the costs of supporting Apple’s Device are increasing. IT managers want better tools to manage the device, such as shutting off the camera or remotely erasing data when the device is lost.
Downloading hundreds of applications is an easy task but a harder one to update them.
On the other hand, the devices are expensive. And the correlated problem is that only a few operators provide them. This makes price negotiation harder to manage.
And, some companies have revised their telecom policies. They now ask employees to share the cost of equipment.
